The Ferg’s Oatmeal Stout Fresh Wort Kit – Keg King makes it easy to brew a luscious, dark and smooth stout without completing a full all grain brew day. Based on Fergus McGregor’s award-winning recipe, this professionally prepared wort combines a complex selection of base malts, roasted specialty grains and oatmeal to produce a beer with exceptional depth and drinkability.

Oatmeal stout is known for its soft texture and rounded malt flavour. Unlike sharper or more heavily roasted stout styles, it offers a smooth mouthfeel that helps balance the coffee, cocoa and dark malt notes. This makes it an excellent choice for experienced stout drinkers as well as those trying a darker beer for the first time.

The wort arrives ready to ferment, saving you the time and equipment required for mashing, sparging and boiling. Simply transfer the contents into a sanitised fermenter, add approximately 3 litres of clean water, pitch your chosen yeast and maintain a stable fermentation temperature.

Flavour and Aroma Profile

Expect a deep black beer with inviting chocolate character on both the aroma and palate. Roasted and dark malts contribute cocoa, light coffee and toasted grain flavours, while the oatmeal creates a softer body and smoother finish.

The malt profile is rich and complex without becoming harsh. Gentle sweetness supports the roasted flavours, while approximately 27 IBUs of bitterness keep the finished beer balanced and easy to drink.

The oatmeal also contributes a silky texture and may support a dense, creamy head. The result is a satisfying stout suited to cool evenings, relaxed drinks and pairing with rich meals or desserts.

Recommended Yeast Styles

A traditional English ale yeast will complement the rich malt profile and soft mouthfeel. Suitable options may include:

  • Fermentis SafAle S-04
  • Lallemand Nottingham
  • Mangrove Jack’s M15 Empire Ale
  • Mangrove Jack’s M42 New World Strong Ale
  • CellarScience English Ale Yeast

SafAle S-04 is a strong option for a rounded, malt-forward result with gentle fruit character. Nottingham can create a cleaner and slightly drier finish, while M15 may enhance the full-bodied English ale profile.

Always follow the pitching rate and temperature instructions printed on your selected yeast packet.

Brewing Instructions

  1. Clean and sanitise the fermenter, lid, tap, airlock and all equipment that will contact the wort.
  2. Transfer the complete contents of the fresh wort kit into the sanitised fermenter.
  3. Add approximately 3 litres of clean water.
  4. Mix thoroughly and aerate the wort before adding yeast.
  5. Confirm the wort is within the recommended pitching temperature for your selected yeast.
  6. Pitch the yeast and seal the fermenter.
  7. Maintain a stable fermentation temperature within the yeast manufacturer’s recommended range.
  8. Allow fermentation to continue until the specific gravity remains stable over consecutive days.
  9. Bottle or keg the finished beer using properly sanitised equipment.
  10. Carbonate, condition and serve chilled.

Brewer’s Tips

Avoid excessive carbonation, as a moderate carbonation level will better preserve the soft body and rich malt character. Allowing the beer additional conditioning time can also help the chocolate, roasted grain and oatmeal flavours develop into a smoother and more integrated profile.

When kegging, standard carbon dioxide dispensing will produce an enjoyable result. However, a stout tap and suitable nitrogen blend can create a denser head and creamier pub-style pour.

This oatmeal stout pairs especially well with:

  • Chocolate cake and brownies
  • Beef and mushroom pies
  • Slow-cooked meats
  • Barbecued beef
  • Aged cheddar
  • Roasted vegetables
  • Vanilla or caramel desserts

The Ferg’s Oatmeal Stout Fresh Wort Kit – Keg King is an excellent choice for brewers who enjoy rich dark beer without excessive roast bitterness. It delivers award-winning recipe inspiration, genuine all grain character and a smooth, satisfying finish with minimal brewing effort.
