To transform the essence into a true commercial-style rum, you need to adjust its body, sweetness, and oak profile. Spirit flavorings give you the flavor notes, but commercial rums get their rich mouthfeel and deep complexity from real sugar and time spent in barrels.
Here is how you can elevate your mix:
1. Sweeten for Mouthfeel and Taste
Commercial spiced rums are quite sweet and have a viscous, heavy mouthfeel.
    • Add Sugar: Dissolve 1 to 2 tablespoons of white sugar (or simple syrup) per 750ml bottle. Adjust to taste.
    • Use Brown Sugar or Molasses: For a deeper, more authentic rum profile, use brown sugar or a tiny drop of pure blackstrap molasses. This adds a rich, caramelised background flavor.
    • Try Glycerine: If you want the thick, smooth mouthfeel of commercial alcohol without adding too much sweetness, add 5ml of liquid glycerine per 750ml bottle.

2. Mimic Barrel Aging (With Oak)
Because you are using a neutral spirit or vodka, the alcohol lacks the woody tannins of a barrel. You can easily fix this using homebrew oak products.
    • Oak Chips or Cubes: Add medium to heavy toasted American oak chips to your neutral spirit before or during the mixing stage.
    • The Process: Leave the oak chips in the spirit for 1 to 2 weeks. Taste it every few days. Once it develops a smooth, woody, vanilla-like backbone, strain out the chips.

3. “Age” the Mix (Mellowing)
