The West Coast IPA Fresh Wort Kit – Keg King makes it easy to brew a bold, bitter and highly aromatic American-style IPA without completing a full all grain brew day. Professionally prepared and ready to ferment, this fresh wort kit gives homebrewers the flavour and structure of a classic West Coast IPA with far less time, equipment and cleaning.
This beer style is known for its assertive bitterness, bright hop aroma and clean finish. The malt profile provides enough body and balance to support the hops, while Centennial, Columbus and Chinook bring layers of grapefruit, pine, spice and resin.
Each cube contains approximately 16.5 litres of wort. Add around 3 litres of clean water to reduce the starting gravity from approximately 1.064 to around 1.054. Alternatively, ferment the wort undiluted for a richer, stronger and more intensely flavoured result.
Flavour and Aroma Profile
Expect a pale to golden beer with a firm malt base and a powerful hop character. Centennial contributes citrus, grapefruit and floral notes, while Columbus adds dank, earthy and resinous depth. Chinook brings pine, spice and additional grapefruit character.
Magnum hops provide approximately 61 IBUs of clean bitterness. The result is assertive but balanced, with a dry, refreshing finish that suits drinkers who enjoy traditional hop-forward American IPAs.
The malt bill combines Ale Malt and Pilsner Malt with a small amount of Carahell. This creates a clean foundation with light bread, biscuit and gentle caramel notes.

Optional Dry Hopping
Dry hopping is not essential, but this recipe is well suited to experimentation. Add approximately 40 to 80 grams of a classic IPA hop around three days before packaging.
Suitable options include:
- Citra
- Centennial
- Columbus
- Chinook
- Amarillo
- Mosaic
- Simcoe
- Galaxy
For a traditional pine and grapefruit profile, try Chinook, Centennial or Columbus. For more tropical fruit and citrus, choose Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe or Galaxy.
One suggested hop-forward combination is:
- 40g Chinook
- 80g Mosaic
- 80g Cascade
This is a very large dry-hop charge and will create an intense aroma. Use a smaller amount for a more restrained result.
Recommended Yeast Options
Suitable yeast strains include:
- Mangrove Jack’s M42 New World Strong Ale
- Fermentis SafAle US-05
- LalBrew BRY-97 West Coast Ale
US-05 and BRY-97 are excellent choices for a clean fermentation that keeps the hop character sharp and expressive. M42 also offers strong attenuation and a dry finish that suits this style.
Always follow the pitching rate and fermentation temperature printed on the selected yeast packet.
Brewing Instructions
- Clean and sanitise your fermenter, lid, tap, airlock and all equipment that will contact the wort.
- Transfer the full contents of the wort cube into the sanitised fermenter.
- Add approximately 3 litres of clean water for the intended strength and balance.
- Mix thoroughly and aerate the wort before pitching yeast.
- Confirm the wort is within the recommended temperature range for your selected yeast.
- Add M42, US-05, BRY-97 or another suitable clean American ale yeast.
- Maintain a stable fermentation temperature.
- Add your chosen dry hops around three days before packaging, if desired.
- Confirm fermentation is complete by checking for a stable specific gravity over consecutive days.
- Bottle or keg using properly sanitised equipment.
- Carbonate, condition and serve chilled.
Brewer’s Tips
Minimise oxygen exposure when adding dry hops, transferring or packaging. Oxygen can quickly dull the fresh hop aroma and reduce the bright character expected from a West Coast IPA.
Cold conditioning can help improve clarity and produce a cleaner finish. However, avoid leaving the beer warm for too long after fermentation, especially when using a large dry-hop addition.
This IPA pairs well with:
- Burgers
- Barbecued meats
- Spicy chicken
- Pizza
- Tacos
- Strong cheeses
- Smoked foods
- Salty snacks
